[IMPLEMENTED] Feature request: Transform Text Input to ComboBox

Balsamiq Edit: This has been implemented in version 3.3.9

The new “Transform to” feature is a great time saver! One transformation that would be helpful is to be able to transform a Text Input control to a ComboBox. This would be especially useful when copying and pasting elements to make a form. It seems that the opposite direction is already possible (ComboBox to Text Input).

Hi @EdRyan,

Thanks for reaching out today.

You’re right, this would be a nice addition for this new feature. I’ve added this request to our internal tracker so we can review and consider it for the future.

If others would like to see this feature, please let us know (or add your Like/Heart vote above) to help us prioritize this request.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts on this, @EdRyan!

Hi @EdRyan,

We just released a new pre-release including this feature, you can download it here if needed:

Just a word of caution here: as this is a pre-release version, we don’t recommend using it on mission-critical work. The fix will also be included in the next official version.

Thanks again for the request!

Hi @EdRyan ,

Just wanted to mention that we just released our latest official version (3.3.9) including this. :slightly_smiling:

You can get the new version (3.3.9) here:

And the complete release notes are here:

Great, thanks!

If I may share this little observation here:

Balsamiq does not permit the user to transform a ‘Text Area’ object to a ComboBox. But I can transform Text Area to Text Input, then Text Input to ComboBox. It may be worthwhile adding the direct ability.

Sorry, we missed your message yesterday @Ryan. I can totally see the need for this and I’ve added the request so the team can review it.

Thanks for the suggestion. Anything else, we’re here!

Hi @Ryan,

We just released our latest official version (3.5.9) and you can now transform a Text Area control to a Combo Box control. Thanks again for the request!

The new version (3.5.9) is available here.
And the complete release notes are here if needed.

Thanks for this. The funny thing is that I hadn’t run into this for a while until only a couple of days ago where I think I was trying to transform between Text Input and Checkbox, I had transform to Label as an intermediary step.

Basically the use case is that I’m copying an entire popup dialog and then transforming the different controls in place rather than having to realign new ones, in an effort to maintain consistency.
